Good morning all,

I am a member of an established Investment club on the South Coast of England (nr: Worthing)

Started 13 years ago, the club meets once a month to discuss and analyze shares and manage the club’s investment portfolio. Members contribute a monthly investment payment that becomes part of the portfolio. The club is organized as a partnership and follows the investment principles of the an independent non-profit member driven organization.

At present there are 18 companies within our portfolio and the total is approx £30k - the club membership is off the opinion that we have reasonably good portfolio with a sector spread.

The problem is that over the years the membership has dwindled to 7 and now we feel we must try to increase our membership.

to recap on the 7 members
One has moved to Yorkshire and therefore his input is minimal
Two members very rarely attend meeting (and no input)
One member cannot attend meeting as he is a carer to his wife (long term) - no input
So our meetings are at most 3
Monthly investment payment £20 (minimum) althought some members make a greater contribution the total monthly investment is about £200 plus dividends received.

There is a need for new members.

Can anybody offer some observations / guideance.

Regards
David

You could try advertising on http://www.proshareclubs.co.uk.

This is where I got the draft rules and constitution when our club started about 13 years ago. At the time most of us worked for the same organisation and we got sick of talking about work, football, politics etc in the pub. Our club was called the MarkeTears Investment Club (which you might Google :-) ). That club's members eventually decided to cash in our profit and disband. By then some of us had formed another club, Plan B Investment Club, which is still going strong and currently showing about 20% profit.

Good Luck

I live in Bristol and belong to 4 different investment clubs around and about. Only one owns a joint portfolio and it is small, intended to inform our own portfolios, but it has almost tripled its funds since inauguration in (unfortunately!) march 2000. One club called ShareTalk is quite large and has directors of public companies coming to present, the others are discussion forums.

If you are interested in any of these, let me know whereabouts you live and what your interests are and I can put you in touch: avonseawitch@yahoo.co.uk

My investment club went through exactly this problem. Our solution was to wind up the club and pay everyone out.
We then agreed to go on meeting at the same appointed time but now as a "Gentlemans Club" ie a gambling club. Basically we set up an online account with Skybet and each put £10 pm in the kitty even if we cannot attend.
We tried rotating the decision making every month so that one person was accountable for what bets were placed. There would then be a review of the results at the nexy meeting.
After a time we moved to our present system of debating first and agreeing the bets.
Does it work? Well Yes. Each year the net effect of our betting is broadly neutral so we accumulate the monthly stakes. At Christmas we go out for a good meal on the proceeds and then start again.
Its just as much fun as the investment club but without all the formalities.
