Micawber has been a respected and valuable contributor to the forum for many years. Clearly, a knowledgeable man with lots of experience, which many of us have benefitted from. He commented a while ago about 'tedious political arguments' on this thread and I'd hate to think that was what was keeping him away.

Nick Train thinks Manchester United will treble in the future? So bad news for Manchester City fans then. Plus why sitting on your hands is good for investing.

Not my usual thing but, why not.

Just set up a monthly saving scheme via HL, after reading an article on FT Adviser -

https://www.ftadviser.co...-ludicrous-proposition/

It wasn't so much the article but the nudge to remind me that the best time to invest was 30 years ago, failing that today will do, so I put money I don't need today equally into -

Fundsmith
Lindsell Train UK
Lindsell Train Global
SL UK Smaller companies

Will review in a years time, just interested in how they do in the real world, not charts and smarts and vanguard and ifs and buts.. just real performance that affects my wealth.

Why choose those funds, why not.

Been waiting on Royal Mail to hit 600p and sell, finally reached it but I got greedy as it kept rising to 630.

Past couple of days it's lost recent gains at 549 after a mediocre trading update. The waiting begins again... irritated at the delay. Confident it will rise again.

The Burberry shares we bought in ISA last week (with profit trimmed from RIO) were up by 10%. Now 10% a week annualises nicely, so cashed them in to place the proceeds in VOD at 193 - to replace the VOD shares we last sold in January at 239.

john_r will no doubt tell me we're in another spiral of death. Let's see....

Remember, it's the shares Tony Peterson doesn't mention that may tell the more interesting story

You're probably right, Loddy, as I appear once again to be closing in on another year with gains of over 17%.

If I knew back last year this would be the price it finished at today, I would have been ecstatic. I was aiming for 500p to sell at, and have mostly held on. Probably going to sell some more next wee, hoping to buy Vodaphone and add to Saga. Too late to add to Burberry now unfortunately.

Lot of disgruntled colleagues at work about the new boss getting £6000000 to replace Moya at the top, whilst we struggled to get a pay rise.. One highlight was someone asking a manager why the new boss is getting 6mil, whilst the amount I asked for to to overtime was called 'Extortinate rates' - They then put an agency worker on what I wanted as overtime - they pay out more than double our hourly wage for an agency worker - we worked out it would of cost them less to pay me what I wanted for the overtime than to pay the agency worker who took double the time to do the work. Another fun filled week posting letters!

I find this nonsensical of management. The same happens in the NHS, where they prune back the staff then have to overpay to get the agency staff.
Similarly, local councils cut back staff and then sub-contract work out, but don't have the staff to monitor the work. I wonder why the pothole repairs are so shoddy........?

Have sold some BRCI today (after a nice increase over the tensions with Iran raising oil prices) and bought some Vodafone (which seems to be quite good value due to the drop after the CEO announcing he's stepping down). Comsidering selling some GSK but holding at the moment

That's a reason to sell his fund then ;).

Seriously though, on the pitch, Manchester United have many problems. They spend an awful amount of money for players that generally do not perform to their potential. Pogba, Lukaku and Sanchez spring to mind.

I don't think City fans will be quaking in their boots at this news........

I really should be grateful to the US hedge funds which hammered UK retailers just a couple of months back, enabling me to fill boots with Sainsbury and Marks at bargain prices.

So this morning cashed in a bit more of what is now a 41% profit on the Sainsbury's we purchased less than two months ago and switched it to BT. It seems to me that the two telecoms in our ISAs are the only things at bargain prices at present.

Especial thanks for all the March doom mongers. And even poor derided Marks has moved into excess profit territory in our portfolio today too.

It'll all crash you know - looking toppy.....ha.

Bought Halfords on the 12% drop this morning (feel free to mock!)... Seemed like an overreaction to the results and has a lot going for it in my view in terms of:

- decent financials
- online business complementing rather than 'cannibalising' the stores as HL colourfully put it...
- good long term prospects

Just switched from Marlborough Micro Cap Growth to TB Amati UK Smaller companies.

As much as I respect Giles Hargreaves, the fund has become far too big (£1.2 billion) to be an effective small cap fund. Also it invests in far too many companies for my liking (inevitable, given its size), ca. 280 vs 60 in the Amati fund.
