Mergers and acquisitions have become a popular business strategy for companies looking to expand into new markets, gain a competitive edge, or acquire new technologies and skill sets and so on. This also can result in synergies that offer real value for both the acquired and the acquiring.

I heard Barclay is planning to merge with Standard Chartered. Standard Chartered shares have surged in Hong Kong.

Will above possible merger bring synergy to them? Thanks.

Good move if it happens. Would give them a bigger asian footprint like HSBC. Lloyds/Natwest domestic banks now.

According to Bloomberg the key motivation for Barclays is to defend themselves against pressure from Edward Bramson. I recall Terry Smith saying that he doesn't like it when firms react to activist investor pressure in this way.

NB Personally I don't buy UK bank shares currently as I have enough exposure via TMPL so am steering clear in any case.
