Hi All

I currently trade online using tdwaterhouse.co.uk, i am looking for a cheaper online trader whos website is reliable.

Does anyone have any tips of who i can sign up with but who also provide a good quality of service?

Try Hargreaves Lansdown www.h-l.co.uk , i was using etrade until I was thrown off when they closed their UK operation. I have found Hargreaves to be really helpful, they answer the phone quickly, have loads of info on their website and generally provide an excellent service (and no I don't work for them)

If you trade shares, then Interactive Investor is a very good one. If your funds are in an ISA they are actually paying out a bonus of 0.5% of the transfer value (up to a maximum of £100).

If instead you deal in funds, then H-L are a good choice and very good customer service. They are terribly expensive to use for buying and selling shares though!

I use interactive investor, very good simple service and cheap. I was thinking of opening a TD waterhouse account as well, though. What is wrong , are they not reliable? Im worried now!

try selftrade.co.uk . reasonably priced , good service , good charting tools . you can check it out online without having to commit yourself , unlike most others .

I have accounts with TDW and Barclays and find TDW much better. They rarely make errors, whereas Barclays have made several, and they offer much wider services e.g. you can buy shares on many foreign exchanges for the same £12.50 charge as in the UK and you can buy a good range of bonds directly.

tps i have been with td waterhouse for at least 8 years , as far as the site being reliable there were several days in the spring
when it crashed for 30mins -90 mins , this was due to the site being updated i was told.....the past 8 weeks it has happened once....you can trade over the phone at this time at online rates.....i do trade often and am quite happy to continue.....one feature i like is that cash can held in various currencies and easily converted.......the rates charged i find are competitive......the staff very helpful. i wish i could be as positive towards banks and building societies !

Another vote from me for Hargreaves Lansdown, I've been trading with them forever?! never had a problem, always polite, knowledgeable, helpful and low charges.......earned a fair bit from trading their shares too!

I changed from Barclays to T D Waterhouse and I can't say I've experienced any problems I can't live with. Nevertheless, if you're happy to restrict yourself to the London markets then Barclays are fine but I wish to trade on a number of exchanges worldwide and Barclays charges are extremely prohibitive - massively so!

Cockney Dave, I have a fair size portfolio with T D Waterhouse and you've set alarm bells ringing. I need to know what's wrong with them in your experience please.

Interactive Brokers are by far the best - they have the lot: DMA, sophisticated order handling, foreign markets, forex, choice of highly configurable trading platforms, £6 per trade UK etc.......
Their system is perhaps too complex for many people.

I found Waterhouse incommunicative. When I transferred my ISAs to them they did not have the courtesy to acknowledge receipt of application form and then had the gall to tell me that it is their policy.

I have found Hargreaves Lansdown easier to deal with and their staff always try to help.
