I followed Salty Dog for some months a couple of years ago when the markets were dropping. There's not doubt that momentum investing does work if you have access to the figures.

In the end I gave up simply because I didn't want to spend every Wednesday evening changing funds ,the markets were recovering anyway, HL charges for funds are high and I decided to go into ITs.

I think if we have a crash SD will always ride it out. They give you 2 months free so it's easy to try it.
Incidentally I did like the fact that he tells you what funds to do BEFORE investing - unlike John Barron who invests usually just before ex-dividend then tells you what he's done.
